Lakefront Ranking 2020

The ten most expensive lakeside homes in the world

  • Engel & Völkers presents ten most exclusive lakeside properties worldwide*
  • Highest priced residential estate on Lake Austin in Texas – at 34.5 million euros

The highest price paid for a lakefront mansion worldwide is on Lake Austin in Texas, valued at 34.5 million euros (approx. 38,9 million USD). This finding emerges with a new ranking of the Top 10 lakeside properties worldwide, just published by Engel & Völkers. Regions in the USA and Canada are also included in the ranking, alongside European lakes. These regions attract buyers which appreciate landscape and recreational value. “We are delighted to be presenting our international Top 10 residential properties in waterfront locations in this ranking,” says Sven Odia, CEO of Engel & Völkers AG. The data used to compile this list is based on top prices of Engel & Völkers listings for residential properties in those lake regions where the real estate company is operational.

Top prices: USA, France and Switzerland ranked Top 3

With an asking price of 34.5 million euros (approx. 38,9 million USD), the “Willow Beach” estate on Lake Austin, in Texas, comes first in the ranking. In the French region of Var, Engel & Völkers is currently brokering a luxury residence in a class of its own: The “Château du Haut Verdon” was built in 1021 and affords unique views over Lake Sainte-Croix. At 15.5 million euros, this property comes in second place in this lakefront ranking. The villa known as the “Pearl of Collina d’Oro”, located in the Swiss region of Ticino, ranks third in this international comparison, with a top asking price of 12 million euros (approx.12.8 million Swiss francs). The extensive “Aspen Springs Drive” estate in Park City, USA, boasts its own private lake and comes in fourth place with an asking price of 11 million euros (approx.12.5 million US dollars). Fifth place is “St.Antony Way” in Whistler Blackcomb with an asking price of 10.9 million euros (approx. 16.8 million CAD). The lake district of Ticino also features in sixth place in the ranking: A villa in the Swiss village of Montagnola is currently on sale for 9.3 million euros (approx.9.9 million Swiss francs). Another prestigious property can be acquired on Lake Como for 8.5 million euros (seventh place in the ranking). “Villa Argegno” in Cernobbio affords an exclusive panoramic view of the lake, as well as ample privacy. Located in the Italian town of Verbania on Lake Maggiore, “Villa il Leoncino” is on the market with an asking price of 8 million euros, securing it eighth place in the international comparison of properties in lakefront locations. Next on the list, in ninth place, an idyllic residence on the banks of Lake Tremblant in Quebec, Canada, is on the market for 6.9 million euros (approx. 10.5 million CAD). And finally, in tenth place, is a property on Lake Wörth in Austria, which is on sale for 4.7 million euros.

Outlook: Demand for exclusive second homes on the rise “The demand for homes in recreational locations such as lake districts is increasing, especially in the luxury segment,” says Sven Odia. The ongoing coronavirus crisis has been a contributing factor here, reflected in discussions with prospective buyers: As well as the classic wish to own a property surrounded by nature, considerations such as security, comfort and luxury amenities are becoming more and more important.

Consequently, prices are rising around the world for properties in regions considered natural idylls that can serve as a safe haven. “Over the coming years, we expect prices on the luxury property market to continue to rise. Prominent locations at one with nature and with outstanding exclusive facilities are being positively received by buyers,” Mr. Odia adds.

The “Willow Beach” estate on Lake Austin in Texas presides over seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms. There is a main house and guesthouse, connected by a bridge. The expansive property is like a peninsula in shape, with plenty of opportunities for private retreat and an abundance of luxury comforts. The award-winning design, finished in natural materials such as Brazilian Ipê wood and hand-picked Italian limestone, make this residence a contemporary masterpiece.
